Czechs call for slow-down on ratification process

The Czech Government has called into question the rate at which the EU is trying to get the European Constitution Reform Treaty ratified by all memberstates.

Alexander Vondra, the Czech Minister for EU Affairs has said that getting the treaty ratifed in 12 months is “record tempo” rather than the 24 months normally allowed for ratification.

This is not the first time the Czechs have expressed concerns about the timetable, but many EU leaders want the treaty ratified before the European Parliament elections, timetabled for June 2009.

Dutch EU referendum now unlikely

A referendum on the European Constitution Reform Treaty is now unlikely after the Dutch Council of State advised the Dutch Government that a referendum is unnecessary.

The ‘Section 22' report by the council has said that no legal need for a referendum since the new treaty does not include “constitutional” element.

UK Unions calling for a referendum vote

Demands for a referendum were backed overwhelmingly by unions in the UK yesterday, causing huge embarassment for Gordon Brown and the Labour Party which traditionally has strong connections with the trade unions.

GMB Union head, Paul Brown was quoted as saying that a referendum was a key Labour manifesto pledge - “[it] was right then and is right now”.

An excellent piece on the New Statesman website, the author suggests that if Gordon Brown wants to get the European Constitution Reform Treaty passed, rather than forcing it through the parliament, perhaps he should be courageous and go out and campaign for it in a referendum.

Lord Howell, a UK Tory Peer, writing in his fortnightly column in the Japan Times , says that the quarrelling over the reform treaty is hampering the essential work of the European Union, and the real threat to the EU does not lie from within, but of the growing strength of economies in Asia.
