LibDems u-turning and flipflopping on European Constitution

In an exclusive interview in today’s Financial Times , Liberal Democrat leader Sir Menzies Campbell has said he does not believe a referendum is necessary.

The position of the Liberal Democrats on the treaty has caused significant division within the party, with many calling for a referendum, and others, such as Campbell saying a referendum is unnecessary.

Pro-constitution campaigners begin to fight-back

An Open-Europe led campaign launched last week in the UK (as mentioned here on ConstitutionWatch last week) has been getting big coverage on tv, radio and in the press in the UK. As we observed last week, what made the grouping interesting was that it was a coming together of pro-europeans and euro-skeptics who found a common cause in wanting the constitution reform treaty brought to the people for popular vote.

Denmark to make referendum decision next month

The Danish government has announced it will begin to review the European Constitution Reform Treaty from next month, and not December as previously planned.

The review, which is known as a ‘paragraph 20 examination’ will look at whether or not a referendum is required on the treaty. Under the Danish constitution, any change in soverignity must be agreed to by the people by referendum.

Support grows for UK referendum

About now in London a press conference is taking place where a new campaign group is announcing it has formed with the intention of campaigning for a referendum on the European Constitution Reform Treaty. I Want a Referendum is made up of senior MPs from the three major UK political parties.
