Barosso’s harsh words for new member states

EU Commission chief Jose Manuel Barroso is attempting to put manners on the new memberstates who have joined the European Union over the past few years, warning them that they have to prove their membership is not weakening the union since them joining.

His comments were in reference in particular to stalling and disagreement over the future direction of Europe.

“It would be in their interest for them to show that their membership of the EU is not making the union’s life more difficult”

The EU27 are meeting this week in an attempt to try to put back together the Humpty Dumpty of a European Constitution that got up on the wall three years ago, but fell off it two years ago when French and Dutch voters pushed him off.

Poland demands voting reform

Poland is demanding changes to any proposed consitutional treaty at this weeks’ EU summit in Germany.

The voting system agreed in 2004 gives too much power to larger states, such as Germany, claims Polish Foreign Minister Anna Fotyga.

As requested at the time, the Presidency, in the light of very extensive consultations held over the last six months, provides an assessment of the state of discussion with regard to the treaty reform process and explores possible ways forward.
