Welcome to Constitution Watch

Like Dr. Frankenstein’s monster, the European Constitution was pieced together in secret from the bones and organs of previous EU treaties by Valery Giscard d-Estaing, given life and let loose on the unsuspecting people of Europe. We all assumed it had been successfully killed by the wise citizens of France and the Netherlands with their rejection of it in referendums two years ago, but a new Doctor, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, is now trying to bring this monstrous creation back from the dead to terrorise Europe again with its huge, unwieldy body and power-grabbing arms.

Libertas believes that the Constitution – or whatever new name it is to be given – subverts proper democratic accountability in the European Union, further empowers an already powerful elite and exacerbates the alienation felt by European citizens. We urge all Europeans to reject the Constitution or any derivation of it which will be arrived at in forthcoming meetings. Libertas will propose that a new Constitution be framed by a Convention of MEPs - elected by the people in the 2009 European Elections - who have detailed their proposals for the document in their manifestos.

Constitution Watch will give you a regular update on developments in Dr. Merkel’s attempts to have the EU member state governments smuggle this foul and pestilent creation past the people again.

The “Undead” Constitutional Treaty
Thursday, 24 May 2007

The President of the European Commission today announced that ‘a compromise to break the deadlock in EU institutional reform’ might be possible next month. The EU’s legislative branch, the European Parliament, has had no sight of the proposed deal ‘to break the deadlock’.

However, it would appear that Phoenix like, or Dracula like (depending on your perspective), something very like the last draft of the European Constitution will rise from the grave from whence which it was placed by the citizens of France and the Netherlands…see this report from Reuters on Ireland.com.

Constitutional smoke and mirrors
Wednesday, 09 May 2007

By Dr. Jana Hybaskova, MEP, Czech Republic.

As a Member of the European Parliament, I am not satisfied with the German Presidency of the EU. As an elected representative paid with European taxpayers’ money, I am certain I should be democratically entitled to vote on laws which affect those taxpayers and surely the most important legislation on which I can vote is a treaty founding a Constitution for Europe.

When representing the people means ignoring them….
Thursday, 26 April 2007
In an interview to the UK’s Guardian Newspaper, Tony Blair this morning said the UK remains ‘eurosceptic’ - which he lays most of the blame on the media. “Even if they have a certain prejudice about Europe, they don’t expect their government necessarily to share it or act upon it”. Tony Blair promised a referendum on the European Constitution, but has recently back-tracked on that promise after the UK and The Netherlands proposed a watered-down solution, which would result in an implementation of the elements of the constitution by making ‘amendments’ to existing treaties. Blair has been accused of trying to bring in elements of the constitution “by the back door”.

Rebranding of the Constitution?
Monday, 23 April 2007

Angela Merkel has been accused of planning to smuggle key parts of the failed European constitution into a new slimmed-down treaty after a letter to EU leaders in which she suggested a series of presentational changes was leaked.

"Public opinion will be led to adopt, without knowing it, the proposals that we dare not present to them directly" ... "All the earlier proposals will be in the new text, but will be hidden and disguised in some way."
Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, Le Monde, June 2007
