Belgium may yet block Lisbon Treaty signing - and here’s why…

Last week we blogged about the spat between Brussels and Lisbon over the location of the signing ceremony for the new constitution reform treaty, however despite the location of the signing ceremony, Belgium may yet block the signing ceremony. The reason? There might not be anyone from Beligum able to sign it.

The General Election in Belgium was almost five months ago, and despite that amount of time elapsing, a new government has yet to form. Legal eagles in Belgium (and elsewhere) are fearful that if no new government is formed by December 13th (the date of the signing ceremony) the result will be that the outgoing government will not have the legal competance to sign the treaty - as their powers are purely related to dealing with ‘current affairs’ until the new government takes it’s place.
