Portugal and Brussels are being accused ‘pathetic vanity’ for refusing to compromise over the location of the signing ceremony for the European Constitution Reform Treaty. Portugal, as current holders of the EU presidency are pushing for the signing ceremeony (on December 13) to be held in Portugal. However December 13 is the first day of the EU summit being held in Brussels, and as such Belgium is pushing for the signing ceremony to be moved to Brussels. The compromise? All 27 EU leaders, their staff and EU staff will travel to Lisbon in the morning for the signing ceremony, then they will all travel from Lisbon to Brussels for the summit that evening. The London Times has calculated this travel at 77,000km, and this is a most conservative figure. |
