Europe’s quarreling crew

Lord Howell, a UK Tory Peer, writing in his fortnightly column in the Japan Times , says that the quarrelling over the reform treaty is hampering the essential work of the European Union, and the real threat to the EU does not lie from within, but of the growing strength of economies in Asia. Howell writes that the present problems with the reform treaty could have been avoided if instead of a wholly new treaty a ‘tidying up’ treaty was produced instead. Lord Howell acknowledges that whilst many citizens of Europe are in favour of closer cooperation, many do not want over-protectionism from outside competition.

“If Europe wants to stay afloat in this new global economic sea, it will have to spend more time letting enterprise have its head and less time arguing on the bridge about who should hold the tiller and in which direction the EU should be steering”.
