UK Opposition leader calls for referendum

Leader of the UK’s second largest political party and leader of the opposition to Gordon Brown’s Government, David Cameron has called for a referendum on the European Constitution Reform Treaty.

The Conservative Party leader last night pledged to campaign for a referendum on the treaty, pointing to the pledge made by Labour in the run up to the last UK general election. Cameron has said he believes that people in then UK want a referendum.

“When Parliament returns we will hold an Opposition Day Debate and put down a very simple and clear motion to support a referendum on the European constitution.” - David Cameron
