Irish Trade Unions to Campaign for “No” Vote

EU Observer reports that the Irish Congress of Trade Unions (ICTU) has threatened to campaign for a “No” vote in an Irish referendum on the proposed new EU treaty if the clause allowing Ireland to opt out of the Charter of Fundamental Rights is not removed. The Green Party, partners in the new coalition government, also said they would not support any watering down of EU-wide equality legislation for domestic implementation.

The Irish Times reports that Taoiseach Bertie Ahern moved to reassure the unions that Ireland did not seek any ‘opt-out’ as has been reported. “We simply, prudently and sensibly indicated that we would wish to study the implications of the UK position regarding their request to introduce a protocol on the charter relating to its scope in UK law.

“While we will continue to examine the technical implications, we are satisfied that the text of the charter itself and the wording to be included in the treaty appear to adequately define its scope and application. We want the charter to apply just as we agreed it should in 2004,” Mr Ahern said.

Right so, that makes it all clear!
