| In a bizarre and disturbing development in last night’s EU Treaty talks, French President Nicolas Sarkozy has managed to secure the dropping of a commitment to “free and undistorted” competition as one of the EU’s stated aims – a reference which has been included in every treaty since 1957. This is apparently in reaction to analysis of the French “No” vote on the Treaty in 2005, which underlined voters’ hostility about the supposed neo-liberal economics enshrined in the document. However, this concession will now raise serious questions about the EU’s ability to tackle monopolies, pursue anti-trust measures and challenge the so-called “national champions” much beloved by Sarkozy’s predecessor. Worse still, the French delegation is also seeking to drop the EU’s commitment to price stability. As a Libertas advisory board member told Constitution Watch this mornning: “if the commitment to price stability is dropped, we will see everyone queuing up to exit the Euro”. So very early in his promising presidency, it appears Sarkozy has given in to the very vested interests he promised to challenge and all for the sake of this cloak and dagger rehash of a rejected formula, which we hope will be abandoned by Europe’s leaders before its citizens finally bury it. The Times and EU Observer have more. |
