Welcome to Constitution Watch

Like Dr. Frankenstein’s monster, the European Constitution was pieced together in secret from the bones and organs of previous EU treaties by Valery Giscard d-Estaing, given life and let loose on the unsuspecting people of Europe. We all assumed it had been successfully killed by the wise citizens of France and the Netherlands with their rejection of it in referendums two years ago, but a new Doctor, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, is now trying to bring this monstrous creation back from the dead to terrorise Europe again with its huge, unwieldy body and power-grabbing arms.

Libertas believes that the Constitution – or whatever new name it is to be given – subverts proper democratic accountability in the European Union, further empowers an already powerful elite and exacerbates the alienation felt by European citizens. We urge all Europeans to reject the Constitution or any derivation of it which will be arrived at in forthcoming meetings. Libertas will propose that a new Constitution be framed by a Convention of MEPs - elected by the people in the 2009 European Elections - who have detailed their proposals for the document in their manifestos.

Constitution Watch will give you a regular update on developments in Dr. Merkel’s attempts to have the EU member state governments smuggle this foul and pestilent creation past the people again.

"Public opinion will be led to adopt, without knowing it, the proposals that we dare not present to them directly" ... "All the earlier proposals will be in the new text, but will be hidden and disguised in some way."
