When representing the people means ignoring them….

In an interview to the UK’s Guardian Newspaper, Tony Blair this morning said the UK remains ‘eurosceptic’ - which he lays most of the blame on the media. “Even if they have a certain prejudice about Europe, they don’t expect their government necessarily to share it or act upon it”. Tony Blair promised a referendum on the European Constitution, but has recently back-tracked on that promise after the UK and The Netherlands proposed a watered-down solution, which would result in an implementation of the elements of the constitution by making ‘amendments’ to existing treaties. Blair has been accused of trying to bring in elements of the constitution “by the back door”.

A number of European leaders were to gather in early May to agree on further steps to bring in the European Constitution. Barosso had arranged a meeting in Portugal on the 12-13 of May, the leaders of Germany, Portugal, Poland, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Italy, The Netherland and the UK had been invited, however countries such as Ireland, Finland and Belgium had not (these being countries to yet ratify the constitution). Barosso has since had to climb down on the plan after much criticism.

There is a growing momentum amongst a number of European leaders to bring in this constitution, despite it being voted against in France and The Netherlands and doubt over whether it would be passed in the Czech Republic, Denmark, Poland, Sweden, Portugal, The UK and Ireland.

While Blair lays the blame on the media for the eurosceptism in Europe, acknowledging overwhelming opposition to EU plans and then ignorning the citizens would not help address that issue, but rather the opposite. This is the very ‘democratic deficit’ that leads many people to be opposed to Europe. It would seem that even despite poor support, this consitution will be pushed through by ignoring the people of Europe.
