Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy was elected President of France on Sunday, in a run-off vote with saw an 85% turn-out. Of those people who voted, 53% voted for Sarkozy, whilst 46% voted for Royal.

Sarkozy takes office on May 16 and will immediately have big challenges facing him.

France has a unemployment rate of 8% - Sarkozy has said he plans to implment more flexible working laws, to loosen the current 35-hour working week, and excempt over-time from tax and social security charges.

France’s public sector debt exceeds the acceptable EU limit of 60% of GDP. Sarcozy has committed to limit public spending, reduce the number of people employed in the public sector and bring debt under control, to below 60% in five years.

Parliamentary elections take place on June 10 and 17. Sarkozy will need a strong parliament, and strong support in order to bring about necessary and essential reform.
