Committee of wise men to be setup, which (euro)star will they end up following?
Wednesday, 31 October 2007

The Financial Times Brussels Blog reports that European leaders are giving in to Sarkozy’s calls for a committee of wise men to be setup to look at what the EU should look like and what it should be doing 20 to 30 years from now.

The likely composition of this committee are suggested (according to the FT Blog) of including former European Commission president Jacques Delors, French economist Jean Pisani-Ferry, the Finish head of Nokia Jorma Ollila and British Climate Change expert Sir Nicholas Stern.

Sarkozy has suggested there be 12 members of this committee - but surely there should be 490 million. The EU needs to engage with an open and honest dialogue with the citizens of Europe about the future and direction it takes, what areas of competancy it should look at, and how best to represent all the citizens of the union.

What Europe does not need is another unaccountable secret committee meeting in the dark deciding on the future of Europe.
