Dermot Ahern “sets the bar for dishonesty” on Lisbon

Responding to comments in a morning Newspaper that the idea that you can be pro-European and oppose the Lisbon Treaty is a “dangerous myth”, Libertas Executive Director Naoise Nunn issued the following statement:

“We’ve seen the Government perform some tremendous verbal acrobatics over the past few years, but this just about takes the biscuit.

Is the Minister saying that his colleague, the Minister for Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, is anti-European because he voted against the Nice treaty?

This is a debate about the future of the EU, not its past. We applaud the great work the EU has accomplished in restoring peace and prosperity to a troubled continent after World War II, and in supporting our emergence as a functioning independent and wealthy nation.

However, it was not the Bureaucrats in Brussels who gave us a hand up, - it was the millions of good EU citizens who willingly parted with their taxes to support us. What we owe them now is a full and honest debate on where the EU is going. We owe Dermot Ahern’s cronies nothing.

Minister Ahern is setting the bar for dishonesty from the “yes” campaign in this referendum. We expect many of his colleagues will try to surpass him in the months to come”.
