Creighton and Fine Gael embarrass Ireland

The Washington Times newspaper has picked up on anti-American sentiment in the Irish Lisbon Treaty referendum in a front page article ahead of Bertie Ahern's address to Congress Today.

The Times refers to comments by Fine Gael deputy Lucinda Creighton last week, who claimed that the US opposed the Lisbon Treaty. The paper says her comments "cast a shadow" over the Taoiseach's visit to the US.

Responding to the article, Libertas executive director Naoise Nunn said:

"This highlights the gross irresponsibility of Deputy Creighton's unwarranted, and frankly stupid, attack on Libertas. She has now sent a clear signal to our most important trading partner is viewed with hostility by our second largest political party, and she has give the US a clear reason to view the election of a Fine Gael led Government with fear.

Further, comments in the article from the US State department completely refute the ludicrous suggestion that the involvement in the "No" campaign by two of our most successful businessmen is anything more than a genuine act of patriotic concern.

Fine Gael has managed to cast a shadow over what should have been a great day for Ireland in Washington, and she has embarrassed the country.

Both Deputies Kenny and Creighton should apologise to the Irish people for her stupid, shameful comments, and retract them immediately."
