Libertas handing out copies of the Lisbon Treaty

The Taoiseach, Tanaiste, and Ireland's EU commissioner have "diminished credibility" on the Lisbon Treaty, given that they have not read it, Libertas Chairman Declan Ganley has said today.

Speaking from Sligo, where he was joined by 20 volunteers on the town's streets ahead of a debate in Sligo chamber of commerce, Mr. Ganley said that it "was a real shame" that the most prominent of those campaigning for a "Yes" vote had not bothered to read the document they were asking people to vote for.

Libertas is handing out of copies of the Treaty on the streets in the course of its campaign.

"The fundmental difference between us and them is that we want people to read the Lisbon Treaty, and they don't even want to read it themselves.

For most people, Lisbon is 384 pages with a question mark on the front cover. One would have hoped that this wouldn't apply to Brian Cowen, but apparently it does.

When we offer people copies of the Treaty, they take it eagerly. It is somewhat ridiculous that despite spending 7million Euro on propaganda, the Taoiseach wouldn't even buy a copy for himself.

He should have made sure every citizen has a copy. If we are being asked to accept its contents, everyone should at least have been given the chance to read it.

It would have cost millions less than what they are actually doing.

Thanks to them, most people don't know what's in Lisbon. When people don't know, they should, and will, vote no".
