Ireland to say no? - The people’s comment

Yesterday we blogged the coverage from Ireland about the Irish Times/TNS MRBI poll which suggested only 25% of people poll would actually vote in favour of the reform treaty. The response in the past 24 hours in Ireland has been interesting.

On Irish Election blog IrishElection.com, the response was small yet one commenter summed it up, in five simple points.

A: It makes it easier to implement a plan by the Commission called CCTB (Common Consolidated Tax Base)

B: The loss of about 50 vetoes including foreign-policy and social-security

C: The new powers for national-parliaments are inadequate and disappointing

D: From 2014, each member state will no longer be automatically entitled to a Commissioner

E: The rotating-presidency of the Council of Ministers is abolished in favour of a 2-yr President

F: The Charter of Fundamental Rights is a serious concern.

On the Irish Politics website Politics.ie the comments were various

“as all the main parties will be calling for a yes vote, far too early to start worrying “

“Personally I’m in the Don’t Know camp and considering the sheer size of the treaty I doubt i’ll have the time or inclination to read through it. My personal thinking on referenda is that if you don’t have enough knowledge to confidently vote Yes then you should vote No and retain the status quo.”

“Christians voting for Turkey”

“For me, the treaty doesn’t offer what I want - transfer of executive power from the commission to the parliament. “

“It is a scandal that out of an EU of 450 million, just 4 million are getting a say in whether we should have a Eurostate. It just goes to show that the EU doesn’t care what the people thinks.”
